If you run a local business — whether it’s a restaurant, salon, or service company — your Google Business Profile might be the most powerful free marketing tool you have.
In fact, even if you’ve never touched it, there’s a good chance your business already has a listing on Google. You just haven’t claimed it yet.
Here’s how to take control of that profile, optimize it for visibility, and turn it into a client-generating machine.
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is what shows up when someone searches your company or a keyword like “restaurants near me.” It’s the map listing, photos, hours, reviews, and directions that appear right at the top of Google results.
If you haven’t claimed it, Google fills in what it can — often with outdated or incorrect info. Once you claim it, you control everything people see about your business.
Best of all? It’s completely free.
You can create or claim your listing at google.com/business.
Here’s what to do:
Search your business name on Google.
If it already exists, click “Own this business?” to claim it.
If it doesn’t exist, create a new one at google.com/business.
Add your information:
Business name
Address or service area
Categories
Phone number, website, and hours
Description of what you do
Logo, photos, and videos
Treat your profile like a mini-website — it’s often the first thing new customers see.
Before your listing goes live, Google will ask you to verify it. This is to prove your business is real.
Most companies receive a postcard with a code sent to their address.
Some service-based businesses can verify via email or phone.
Once verified, you’ll get full control over your listing.
💡 Important: If you don’t claim and verify your profile, competitors or users can suggest edits — even mark your business as “closed.”
Google rewards accuracy.
Your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) must match exactly across your website, Facebook, Yelp, and other directories.
Even small variations like writing “West” in one place and “W.” in another can confuse Google and hurt your ranking.
Consistency = credibility.
People shop with their eyes first.
If you own a restaurant, upload bright, colorful photos of your food and interior.
If you’re a service-based business, show before-and-after photos or your team in action.
Videos are even better — they add personality and help build trust instantly.
Reviews can make or break a local business.
Ask happy customers — and even friends or family — to leave honest reviews to get the ball rolling. Once real clients start leaving feedback, continue to encourage it regularly.
Then, respond to every review.
Thank people for positive comments.
Address negative ones professionally and publicly.
A thoughtful response can turn a bad review into proof that you care about your customers.
Most business owners don’t realize this, but you can post updates to your Google profile — kind of like social media.
Share photos, special events, offers, or even short blogs.
Active profiles tend to rank higher and get more clicks than stagnant ones.
If you’re hosting events, offering promotions, or simply want to stay visible — post it.
